The Muscowpetung Saulteaux Nation announced that every home in their community is now connected to Starlink to provide Wi-Fi and direct connection to its members.
The challenge for the Nation has long been searching for a suitable fibre-optic option that could work with their challenging topography. The Nation sits in the Qu’Appelle Valley, with 80 per cent of the homes at its base. However, the challenges and costs were always too high to overcome to get traditional fibre-optic services.
Due to these challenges, the Nation started looking to satellite providers to bridge that gap. In December 2022, the Nation announced they were partnering with Starlink for this work and started the process to connect homes to the Starlink network.
Less than a year later, the Nation has connected all its residents. It is now the only Indigenous community in Saskatchewan where every residence on the reservation is connected to high-speed internet.
Chief Melissa Tavita said this on social media:
By connecting our entire community with Starlink, we will be providing our children greater access to resource sharing tools and higher learning. Muscowpetung is the only Indigenous community in Saskatchewan where every residence is connected to a transformative medium at such high speed.
