Elon Musk has made it clear that Tesla will not merge with his artificial intelligence startup, xAI. However, Musk says Tesla shareholders will soon have the chance to vote on whether the automaker should invest in the rapidly growing AI company behind the Grok chatbot.
The announcement was made following a report from The Wall Street Journal that SpaceX is investing $2 billion into xAI. That funding is part of a broader $5 billion equity raise coordinated by Morgan Stanley.
While speculation swirled about a potential merger between Tesla and xAI—especially after the Grok chatbot began beta testing in Tesla vehicles—Musk firmly dismissed the idea in a response to an X user asking if investors supported a merger. “No,” Musk replied early Monday morning.

Instead, Musk said over the weekend that he supports Tesla investing in xAI, adding that such a move will be put to a shareholder vote. “If it was up to me, Tesla would have invested in xAI long ago,” he wrote on X. “We will have a shareholder vote on the matter.”

If you are a shareholder, how will you vote? https://t.co/ArH170PIoo
The vote could happen as early as Tesla’s next annual shareholder meeting, which has recently been scheduled for November 6. The specifics of the investment proposal—including how much Tesla may contribute or the terms of any agreement—have not been disclosed.
