Elon Musk says larger Tesla for big families in the works

Elon Musk has dropped two new hints about Tesla’s future lineup, saying that a larger vehicle designed for big families in development.

Earlier this year, Tesla unveiled the Robovan concept during its ‘We, Robot’ event in October. Despite the name, it was not what we were hoping for when it came to a Tesla minivan, as it was designed more for mass transport of both people and cargo, described as being ideal for sports teams or large groups.

Currently, Tesla offers the Model X and Model Y as options for families. The Model X offers three-row seating and space for up to seven passengers, but it is also the most expensive Tesla in the current lineup outside of the Cybertruck.

The Model Y also has a seven-seat configuration but offers a much smaller third row that is really only practical for smaller children, making it less than ideal for larger families, leaving a gap, and opportunity, for Tesla in the minivan and electric vehicle (EV) segment.

While the Robovan missed that segment, it looks like Tesla may be looking to fill the gap, according to two separate exchanges on X between Elon Musk and prospective Tesla owners with larger families.

The first was when a user expressed frustration that the Model X wasn’t spacious enough for their family. Another user chimed in calling for Tesla to make “big Teslas for big families,” and Musk replied as he often does with a simple “Ok.”

In a later exchange with another user and his family of 9, Musk confirmed the Robovan is in development, but added that “some other things” are also in the works.

Tesla has already promised more than one new vehicle will be released in 2025. These will be new, more affordable Teslas leveraging aspects of both its current vehicle platforms and the next-generation platform.
