Electric vehicle (EV) drivers travelling between Calgary and Edmonton once again have a high-speed charging option at CrossIron Mills. The shopping centre has replaced its decommissioned Tesla Supercharger station, partnering with SureCharge to install new Wallbox Supernova 180 kW fast chargers.
In a statement to Drive Tesla, Wallbox confirmed the installation of four Supernova 180 kW chargers, providing eight total fast-charging ports with both NACS and CCS connectors.
According to SureCharge, who has plans for their own DC fast-charging network across Alberta and British Columbia, the new station is expected to be fully operational by the end of December.
The CrossIron Mills site has a long and notable history in Alberta’s EV ecosystem. Tesla opened the CrossIron Mills Supercharger back in 2017 as one of Calgary’s earliest fast charging locations. The eight-stall V2 (150 kW) station became a staple for local owners and highway travellers along the critical Queen Elizabeth II Highway corridor between Calgary and Edmonton., remaining essential until Tesla began expanding its network elsewhere in the region.
In July 2025, however, Tesla shut the station down and began removing the infrastructure—the first Supercharger ever permanently decommissioned in Alberta, and in all of Canada. While some owners hoped the removal suggested a V3 or V4 upgrade, it was learned that CrossIron Mills chose not to renew its lease with Tesla after the mall sought to introduce a revenue-sharing clause.
“Tesla has made the decision to remove their Superchargers from our property. Tesla manages their own charging infrastructure and makes independent decisions about where Superchargers are located,” the mall noted at the time.
Tesla has since focused on expanding newer sites in the region, including a 12-stall V4 Supercharger that opened near the Calgary Airport in February.
