Quebec has continued its dominance of the electric vehicle space, pushing Canadian numbers towards a strong end to 2024.
According to the latest Transport Canada numbers, Quebec accounts for over 50% of the country’s iZEV rebates while only accounting for 25% of all new vehicle sales. However, the province will shortly end its provincial rebate program, which will most likely affect sales moving forward and may lead to an increase in sales as the calendar rolls over to 2025.
To no one’s surprise, Quebec, British Columbia, and Ontario continue to be the country’s tour de force, making up 95% of iZEV rebates.
There are some interesting wrinkles, though. Plug-in hybrids are nearly as popular as electric vehicles outside the big three provinces, while in the Maritimes, they are actually more popular than battery electric vehicles.
In terms of what vehicles are moving the needle, the numbers show that Tesla continues to dominate the iZEV space.
Place | Make | Model | Number of Units Sold in 2024 | Percentage Change Year Over Year |
First | Tesla | Model Y | 19,188 | +113% |
Second | Tesla | Model 3 | 9,940 | +35% |
Third | Volkswagen | ID.4 | 7,259 | +97% |
Fourth | Ford | Mustang Mach-E | 7,083 | +279% |
Fifth | Hyundai | Kona Electric | 6,683 | +77% |
Honourable mentions go to the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which only missed out on the top five by 300 iZEV registrations with 6,361 sales through the end of August.
