British Airways Begins Starlink Wi-Fi Rollout with Boeing 787 Fleet

British Airways has taken its first step toward offering free, high-speed inflight internet, confirming that its first Starlink-equipped aircraft has now entered service.

This milestone is the start of a broader plan to introduce high-speed, low-latency internet across the airline’s entire fleet, with passengers eventually gaining access to the service free of charge.

Rollout begins with 787 fleet

The initial phase of the deployment focuses on British Airways’ Boeing 787-8 aircraft, an obvious choice given these planes previously lacked onboard Wi-Fi. By starting with aircraft that require a full installation rather than replacing existing systems, the airline can streamline the rollout and refine the process before expanding to other aircraft types.

The first Starlink-equipped 787 has already operated several long-haul routes, including flights to North America and India, allowing the airline to test real-world performance ahead of a wider rollout.

A representative for British Airways described the installation as a complex undertaking, noting, “[This] is a real milestone for British airways engineering. We’re starting installation of Starlink on our first aircraft. It’s a major engineering modification involving structural work, wiring, software and extensive testing.”

Free, high-speed connectivity for all passengers

One of the biggest changes with this upgrade is that Starlink Wi-Fi will be offered completely free to passengers, regardless of cabin class or loyalty status. This is a significant shift from traditional inflight connectivity models, which often require paid access or tiered subscriptions, but has become common among carriers offering Starlink.

British Airways says the service will be available from the moment passengers board until they arrive at their destination, offering a more seamless digital experience even on long-haul flights over oceans and remote regions.

Fleet-wide expansion underway

Following the completion of installations on the 787-8 fleet, British Airways plans to expand Starlink integration to additional aircraft, including other Dreamliner variants and eventually its wider long-haul and short-haul fleet.

The rollout is part of a broader agreement by parent company International Airlines Group (IAG), which will see more than 500 aircraft across its airlines—including Aer Lingus, Iberia, Vueling, and LEVEL—equipped with Starlink in the coming years.

British Airways CEO Sean Doyle previously highlighted the significance of the upgrade, saying, “Launching Starlink on both our long-haul and short-haul aircraft is game-changing for us and our customers, elevating their experience on board our flights by offering them seamless connectivity from gate-to-gate.”

The adoption of Starlink by British Airways is part of a wider shift across the aviation industry, with Starlink quickly emerging as a preferred solution thanks to its global coverage and performance advantages over older satellite systems.
