Officials from City of Austin travel to Las Vegas to meet with The Boring Company on potential tunnel network

Elon Musk’s The Boring Company (TBC) proposed an underground tunnel in Austin, Texas last year that would run through the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, which is located just 10 miles away from Giga Texas.

The city appears to be taking the proposal seriously. Officials from the city’s Development Services Department (DSD) were in Las Vegas this week to meet with The Boring Company (TBC) and others to “understand best practices for permitting subgrade (underground) mobility infrastructure.”

The others were the Las Vegas Convention Center, where TBC has already opened the first phase of the Vegas Loop, and development officials with Clark County, Nevada.

According to a DSD spokesperson that spoke with KVUE, discussions took place on the challenges faced during the permitting and approval process of the underground tunnel project in Las Vegas.

The spokesperson also confirmed that while TBC has yet to submit an official plan for review, staff have met with them to discuss city regulations.

An underground tunnel in Austin is not the only project TBC hopes to build in Texas. The company has also shown interest in building tunnels in San Antonio, and Boca Chica, home of SpaceX.
