Tesla Officially Launches Model Y L in China, Deliveries Begin in September

Tesla has officially opened orders for the new Model Y L in China, a larger and more spacious variant of its best-selling electric SUV. After the interior was revealed earlier today, the vehicle is now on sale in China, starting at 339,000 yuan (C$65,100/US$47,200). Built at Giga Shanghai, the first deliveries are expected to begin next month in September.

A Bigger, More Versatile Model Y

The Model Y L features an extended wheelbase, nearly 8 inches longer than the refreshed five-seat Model Y. This added space directly benefits the second and third rows, making the SUV more suitable for adult passengers in the back seats. The second row now comes with powered captain’s chairs, ventilated and heated with electric powered armrests, while the third row gains dedicated vents, heated seating, and cupholders, making it a true six-seat family vehicle.

Both the second and third rows fold flat, providing up to 2,539 liters (89.6 cubic feet) of cargo capacity. Tesla also integrated new design elements, including a full black headliner, silver-plated glass roof, and upgraded aluminum trim throughout the cabin.

Premium Tech and Comfort Features

Tesla has packed the Model Y L with technology upgrades that make it stand out from earlier versions of the SUV. The driver and front passenger get redesigned ventilated seats with adjustable under-thigh support and headrests, while the central touchscreen grows to 16 inches. Rear passengers also benefit from an 8-inch display for climate and media control, while the main center display is a full 16-inches, up from the 15.4-inches on the current Model Y.

In a first for Tesla, the Model Y L also introduces air-cooled wireless phone chargers. Small vents under the charging pads blow cool air onto smartphones to prevent overheating — an increasingly common problem with high-speed wireless charging, and in particular, in other Tesla vehicles. The left charger now supports up to 50W speeds, compared with 30W in the previous Model Y.

Entertainment and sound are boosted by an 18-speaker audio system with a dedicated subwoofer, and drivers can customize the cabin atmosphere with RGB ambient lighting.

Performance and Range

Under the hood, the Model Y L is powered by an 82 kWh LG NMC battery pack and dual-motor All-Wheel Drive setup. Tesla estimates a CLTC range of 527 miles (848km), which equates to about 327 miles (526km) on the EPA cycle. The SUV goes from 0–62 mph in just 4.5 seconds, maintaining its performance edge against domestic competitors.

Tesla has also equipped the vehicle with its latest second-generation suspension system with continuous variable damping, offering smoother rides over diverse road conditions. The Model Y L supports 250 kW peak Supercharging, allowing for rapid charging on Tesla’s growing China Supercharger network.

With deliveries beginning in China in September, the Model Y L is also expected to become available internationally, although the timeline is uncertain.
