Tesla Model Y outsells Honda Civic in California, narrowly misses beating Toyota Camry

In Tesla’s former home state of California, the Model Y came within inches of becoming the best selling car in 2021, even when including internal combustion engine (ICE) cars.

According to data from the California New Car Dealers Association (CNCDA), a total of 60,394 Model Ys were sold in the Golden State last year.

That was enough to outsell the budget-friendly Honda Civic, which registered 59,818 sales during the same time period.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to beat the Toyota Camry, which was the best-selling car in California 2021 with 61,599 units sold, a mere 1,205 units more than the premium electric SUV.

The Model 3 was no slouch either, finishing as the fifth most popular car with 53,572 sales.

The accomplishment is particularly impressive when you consider the base prices of the top three vehicles.

With a number of price increases throughout the year, the Model Y ended 2021 with a starting price of $58,990.

That is basically double that of the Toyota Camry and Honda Civic, which ranges in price from around $26-$32,000 depending on the trim level.

Given the strong performance of both the Model Y, 2021 was likely the last year a gas-powered car tops the best-selling list in California.

The Model Y could even become the best-selling car in the world, something which Elon Musk predicted several years ago. Both Giga Texas and Giga Berlin are in the final stages and ready to start Model Y deliveries as soon as they receive permission to do so.
