The EV world has been in a frenzy ever since Porsche announced that their new Taycan had set a lap record at Germany’s famed Nürburgring, also known as “The Green Hell”. Not to be outdone, soon thereafter Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced via Twitter they were sending a Model S to try and beat the newly created record.
There were a lot of naysayers. Some didn’t believe they would be able to beat the record, others didn’t think they could get track time on such short notice. The ante was upped even further when Musk revealed (again via Twitter) they were using a prototype of a new three motor powertrain, named Plaid.
Then came the unofficial reports that the Plaid Model S had hand clocked a time of 7.23, a full 20 seconds faster than the Porsche Taycan record.
Now Tesla has officially chimed in confirming on Instagram that the Plaid Model S was able to achieve a time of 7:20, and that an even faster time of 7:05 is possible with some tweaks when they return for another attempt next month.
I know we for one can’t wait until Tesla get’s back on the track and officially beats the Taycan lap record.
