Tesla set to update entry-level Model 3 and Model Y with larger battery pack

Tesla looks like they preparing to soon upgrade the battery pack in the entry-level variant of the Model 3, and possibly the Model Y, with a new larger and more efficient battery pack.

The battery pack upgrade, referred to as the CATL “6M” or “E1A,” features a 4% net capacity increase from 60kWh to 62.5kWh and is anticipated to bring benefits in range, performance, and charging speed, according to documentation uncovered by @eivissacopter, who has shared reliable information in the past.

According to the X user, this increased battery capacity will likely be offered initially on the 2025 Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) configuration. This upgraded version could launch as soon as mid-November in Europe, aiming for a WLTP rated range of around 520km (323 miles), a small increase from the current 513km (319 miles).

Even with a 4% increase in battery capacity, this new pack is reported to weigh 1kg (2.2lbs) less than its predecessor, potentially contributing to the Model 3’s overall efficiency and handling.

Another possible plus for the new CATL battery pack is that it is expected to feature improved DC fast charging speeds. The current 60kWh battery in Tesla’s entry-level models can charge up to 170kW, although the documentation did not disclose the specifics of the charging speed of the new battery.

As for what is inside the CATL 6M battery pack, it is expected to incorporate either lithium iron phosphate (LFP) or lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) chemistry. Both LFP and LMFP chemistries are known for their improved thermal stability, longevity, and cost-effectiveness, also benefiting Tesla’s sustainability goals by reducing reliance on rare metals.

While the documentation points to this new battery pack coming to the base Model 3, there is also speculation that it may also eventually replace BYD’s Blade batteries in the base Model Y. If Tesla does expand the use of the pack to the entry-level Model Y, it could streamline and improve Tesla’s overall supply chain.

There is also the matter of the Model Y refresh, known as Project Juniper, which is already in trial production at Giga Shanghai and expected to be released early next year. Tesla could add this new battery to the Model Y RWD when it launches for improved range.
