Tesla is gearing up to start production of the new Model Y at Giga Berlin on Tuesday, January 14. The start of production at Giga Berlin comes just a few days after Tesla launched the Model Y refresh from Giga Shanghai, offering it for sale in the Asia-Pacific region on Friday last week.
According to a report from the German publication Handelsblatt, Tesla management informed employees on Monday about the production launch. The report says Giga Berlin underwent modifications over the holiday break to accommodate the updated model and test builds of the new Model Y were completed at the factory in recent weeks. Employees also participated in specialized training sessions to prepare for the transition.
As we mentioned above, the new Model Y has already been introduced in Tesla’s Design Studio’s in the Asia-Pacific region, but it has not yet appeared in Europe or in North America. With production beginning at Giga Berlin tomorrow, we should see the online configurators in Germany and other European countries updated in the coming days, with deliveries starting a few months after that.
Pricing details for the new Model Y in Europe remain unconfirmed. Currently, the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant starts at €44,990 in Germany, while the Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) starts at €54,990.
Things brings up the question of when production of the new Model Y will start in North America at Giga Texas and Fremont. While there has been no official confirmation from Tesla, we know the company has been updating Giga Texas production lines to accomodate the new design. We were also expecting a simultaneous worldwide launch of the new Model Y, however, due to factors outside of Tesla’s control, that plan was scrapped, but we anticipate a North American launch of the new Model Y very soon.
