Tesla has posted its monthly Supercharger map update, and while a number of potential Supercharger locations have been removed across Canada, there have also been some important spots added that could dramatically improve access to some of the more remote parts of the country.
For the last few months Tesla has been updating their map of upcoming Supercharger locations on a monthly basis, adding potential locations that are still ‘in development’ but not yet fully secured with a signed agreement. This means there can be a number of potential sites added, but also removed with each update, all of which is being done to improve the transparency around Supercharger development.
Keep in mind that just because a potential site has been removed, that doesn’t mean it is never going to happen. As an example, Newmarket, Ontario was added as a potential site a few months ago, then it disappeared last month, and has been added again in this update.
Here’s a breakdown of all the changes.
British Columbia
The west coast saw the biggest update in terms of impact, with potential Supercharger locations added in Prince Rupert, Smithers, and Burns Lake. These additions, along with the potential site in Terrace added last month, could open up a significant portion of the province that was previously inaccessible, or very difficult to access, in an electric vehicle (EV).
There were no other additions, but a number of potential sites were removed, including four on Vancouver Island:
- Nanoose Bay
- Parksville
- Nanaimo
- Comox
- Richmond
- Westbank
Alberta
While there was not a significant number of potential Superchargers added in Alberta, a signification location was added in Fort McMurray. There remains a significant gap between Fort McMurray and the next closest Supercharger, but just like what happened with BC above, we should expect to see more sites added in the following months to close the gap.
The only other change for Alberta was the removal of the ‘in development’ site in Red Deer County.
Saskatchewan & Manitoba
Saskatchewan continues to have no Supercharger locations in development, while Manitoba saw both potential locations in Winnipeg removed.
Ontario & Quebec
Ontario saw four ‘in development’ sites added in Parry Sound, London, Waterloo, and Newmarket. However, six sites were removed:
- Ajax
- Bellville
- Beamsville
- Madoc
- Kingston
- Ottawa
It was a similar story in Quebec, with one location added in Alma, but five sites removed in:
- Chambly
- Drummondville
- Brossard
- Terrebonne
- Saint-Germain-de-Grantham
Atlantic Canada
Not to be left out, Atlantic Canada saw one change as well. St. John’s, Newfoundland got a new ‘in development’ Supercharger pin, although it is unclear if this is in addition to the St. John’s Supercharger that is coming due to it being a Supercharger Voting Winner in Q4 2023. Either way, it looks like Newfoundland will be getting its first Supercharger soon.
