GEICO Still Insuring Tesla Cybertrucks in the US Despite Recent Reports of Policy Cancellations

GEICO, the second largest auto insurer in the United States, has confirmed that it continues to offer coverage for the Tesla Cybertruck. The confirmation comes after some owners expressed concern over the weekend after receiving a letter that their insurance policies with GEICO were being canceled.

The confusion began when several Cybertruck owners took to social media platforms and forums to report that their policies had been dropped without warning. Among them was Robert Stevenson, a Cybertruck owner who shared a letter on X and Reddit, stating that GEICO had removed his Cybertruck from his multi-vehicle policy.

Stevenson posted that GEICO’s reason for the cancellation was that the Cybertruck did not meet the company’s “underwriting guidelines.”

Despite the letters being sent out, GEICO has since clarified that it is not ending coverage for the Cybertruck altogether. In a statement provided to Jalopnik, GEICO explained that “some customers may have received notices stating that personal passenger automobile (PPA) insurance would not be renewed for this vehicle” but emphasized that the Cybertruck remains insurable under both personal and commercial policies.

The company added that it would reach out to affected customers to address any issues related to non-renewals.

One factor complicating matters may be the Cybertruck’s classification as both a consumer and commercial vehicle, depending on its usage. GEICO explained that some policies could have been shifted to their commercial insurance division because of the truck’s weight or other factors. This shift may have caused confusion among owners who were unaware of the need for a commercial policy.
