It is no news that Tesla is planning a Giga Factory in Mexico. However, the codename for the project has been revealed in documents submitted to local officials.
We reported Tesla was nearing the final permit for Giga Mexico. However, the governor of Nuevo Leon, Samuel Garcia, confirmed this week Tesla has submitted the environmental impact statement, in which the project is codenamed ‘Project Mario.”
The documents also revealed the American EV maker has acquired 1,561 hectares of land close to Cerro La Mota and Cunres de Monterrey in Santa Carina. The factory will occupy 260 hectares and Tesla asserts clearing the land would not produce unmitigable environmental impacts.
The environmental impact report proposes several measures to compensate for the disruption to the local ecosystem. They include rescuing about 16,000 flora and fauna specimens and scaring away some animals from the site. The documents include an application for a change of land use.
Last month, Tesla applied for permission to build an industrial warehouse in Santa Carina.
Addressing Tesla’s progress, Garcia said, “This government is interested in having a strong rule of law, a safe, armored state so that the best companies in the world continue to come to Nuevo León so that other countries consider us a green state, in which tourism is encouraged and investment, it helps us greatly to get the best companies to come to Nuevo León to invest. As is the case with Tesla, this came out of Tesla, which on Monday already presented its environmental impact statement, and I hope the largest factory in the world will start operating very soon.”
Tesla plans to bring Giga Mexico online in the first quarter of 2025, where it is expected to produce its $25,000 affordable EV.
