Tesla has started emailing customers in California about the ability to take advantage of up to $15,000 in incentives when purchasing their new EV. The email comes a few weeks after one buyer explained how he was able to purchase a Model 3 for less than $14,000.
By combining federal and state incentives, Tesla explains in the email that Californian buyers can get the entry-level Model 3 starting at $25,240 before taxes, a significant reduction from the selling price of $42,900.
Buyers can take advantage of California’s Clean Cars 4 All program, which slices off up to $9,500. This is in addition to the state’s Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP) of $7,500 and a federal tax credit of $7,500.
There are, however, conditions for buyers to benefit from these incentives. For example, the CVRP requires individuals to earn an income of 400% of the 2022 federal poverty level, or $54,360, for a single-income household. The application must be submitted within 90 days of car purchase or lease. Similarly, the federal EV tax credit can only reduce tax liability. This means buyers must have tax obligations exceeding $7,500 to take full advantage of the credit. Any surplus cannot be carried over to the following year.
This is in addition to restrictions on manufacturers to qualify for the program. One of the conditions might lower the tax credit available to Tesla buyers as most of the minerals the EV maker uses for its battery come from China.
