Tesla Model Y breaks 35 year old sales record in Iceland

The Tesla Model Y has set another record, this time in Iceland, becoming the best-selling car of all time in the country through the first six months of the year. The previous record had stood untouched for 35 years, and was held by the venerable Toyota Corolla.

The Model Y has only been on sale for a little over three years, first launching in the US in early 2020. Even before the electric SUV went on sale CEO Elon Musk predicted it would become the best selling vehicle in the world. After coming close to achieving that record in 2022, the Model Y accomplished the feat of being the best selling vehicle in the world in Q1 2023.

Now the Model Y is putting itself in the record books in Iceland. According to the Icelandic Transportation Authority a total of 1,316 Model Ys were registered in the country in the first six months of the year. That was enough to surpass the second place Toyota Yaris, but also more importantly, it was also enough to break the record of over 1,200 Toyota Corolla’s that were sold during the same time period all the way back in 1988. Tesla’s official Europe Twitter account took to the social media platform to announce the accomplishment, thanking all of the new Icelandic Tesla owners.

The incredible run for the Model Y doesn’t look like it is slowing down. As we noted it has already become the best selling car worldwide during the first three months of the year, and with Tesla reporting record Q2 delivery numbers over the weekend, it would not be surprising to see it at the top of the charts again for Q2 once all of the data has been analyzed.
