Tesla has released its 2022 Conflict Minerals Report. The report takes the same track as previous reports and reviews tantalum, tin, gold and tungsten and its derivates from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022. Tesla refers to these minerals as 3TG materials.
Tesla’s report showcases that the company has set up training for responsible sourcing of minerals and supplier engagement regarding 3TG sourcing. This training covers current Tesla policies around sourcing, supplier expectations and how employees can support the work. In addition to this training, Tesla also set up a new hire training program for their Supply Chain Organization employees that incorporates specific role training and the training mentioned above.
The report also notes that in 2022 Tesla also expanded the scope of its social and environmental audits within its supply chain. Per the annex, Tesla has sourced from countries covered under US conflict minerals disclosure, including Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zambia.
However, per the third-party audit, Tesla sourcing in these countries honours Tesla’s shared goal of a responsible supply chain that does not aid bad actors in the region.
As Tesla notes:
Tesla recognizes the importance of continuing to source from potentially high-risk contexts, including, for example, the DRC region or other CAHRAs; practicing risk mitigation is a preferred path to an embargo or termination of sourcing due to the importance of material production to livelihoods in those areas.
