2027 BMW i3: 700 km Range, 463 hp, and 400kW Fast Charging

BMW has unveiled the all-new i3, marking a significant shift for the nameplate as it returns as a fully electric sport sedan. Unlike the original compact hatchback, this new i3 is positioned as the electric equivalent of the 3 Series, signaling BMW’s next step in bringing its core lineup into the EV era.

The launch model, called the i3 50 xDrive, is built on BMW’s new Neue Klasse platform and comes with dual motors, all-wheel drive, 463 horsepower, and 476 lb-ft of torque. That puts it within striking distance of the BMW M3, even before the German automaker reveals performance figures.

Range is another headline number – BMW says the new i3 can travel up to 708 km (440 miles) on preliminary EPA-based testing, while fast-charging peaks at up to 400 kW thanks to its 800-volt architecture. The company also says the car can add roughly 400 km (250 miles) of range in just 10 minutes under ideal conditions.

That combination of power and range could make the i3 one of BMW’s most important EV launches in years. For a brand that built its reputation on sporty sedans, bringing electrification to the 3 Series formula feels far more significant than simply adding another SUV to the lineup.

BMW is also leaning heavily into efficiency and packaging improvements, with new cylindrical battery cells, a cell-to-pack design, and a structure that integrates the battery pack into the chassis. The result is better rigidity, a flatter floor, and a more modern EV-first layout.

Styling will likely split opinion, as most new BMW designs tend to do, but the i3 clearly moves the brand into a new visual era. The front end blends BMW’s signature grille identity into the lighting elements, while the overall profile keeps the familiar long-hood, short-deck proportions that buyers expect from a 3 Series.

Inside, BMW has gone all-in on a tech-heavy cabin. The i3 features a 17.9-inch central display angled toward the driver, a panoramic display stretching across the base of the windshield, and an updated voice assistant powered by Amazon Alexa+. The cabin also introduces a more sustainable materials strategy, with recycled and lower-impact materials available across several interior trims.

Production is scheduled to begin in August, with deliveries expected to start later this year in some markets and North American availability following around late 2026 or early 2027. Pricing has not been announced, but early expectations suggest BMW will position the i3 as a premium performance EV rather than an entry-level electric sedan.
