Tesla Gets Approval for Black Badges and Dark Helix 2.0 Wheels for Model Y in China

Tesla has officially received regulatory approval in China for a new blacked-out exterior trim package for the Model Y.

The filings show Tesla can now equip the Model Y with black front and rear branding. The automaker has previously received approval to sell the Model Y with black side mirror caps, completing a full set of factory-approved black exterior accents.

In China, Tesla vehicles use both front and rear logos, unlike North America where Tesla has moved toward badge-free front fascias. The regulatory filings therefore list both a black front logo and black rear Tesla lettering, confirming that every visible badge on the Chinese-market Model Y can now be finished in black.

The documents also confirm approval for a new dark-finished 20-inch Helix 2.0 wheel design. These wheels replace the lighter silver versions previously offered and give the Model Y a more cohesive, darker appearance when paired with the black mirrors and black badging.

With all black exterior components now approved for the Model Y, Tesla appears to have cleared the regulatory path for launching the Model Y Performance in the Chinese market. Currently, Tesla offers the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD), Long Range RWD, Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD), and Model Y L variants in China.

The regulatory filings also show these vehicles remain standard production Model Ys built at Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory. They are listed as pure battery-electric vehicles equipped with an Event Data Recording (EDR) system, with an optional ETC on-board unit for toll collection. Battery packs are supplied by major Chinese manufacturers including CATL, EVE Energy, and Aierui New Energy, depending on configuration, with final vehicle assembly handled by Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.

For Chinese buyers, this means the Model Y will soon be available with a more premium, sport-oriented look straight from the factory. For Tesla, it keeps its most important vehicle visually competitive in a market where design updates are increasingly used to stand out in a crowded EV landscape.
