Elon Musk has revealed Tesla will double its robotaxi fleet in Austin, Texas. He stated this in a reply to a post on X, where a user complained about a shortage of rides in the city.
X user Joe Tegtmeyer started the thread by explaining how he unsuccessfully tried to book a robotaxi ride multiple times during the day without success. He said he always got a “High Service Demand” message and hoped Tesla would ramp up service in Austin.
Tesla fan and investor Sawyer Merritt replied to the post, reiterating the difficulty of getting a robotaxi ride. He concluded that Austin lacked a sufficient fleet of robotaxis.
Musk then weighed in with the latest Tesla robotaxi expansion plan for Austin, “The Tesla Robotaxi fleet in Austin should roughly double next month.”

The idea of doubling the fleet might sound impressive. However, the truth is that Tesla is currently significantly short of its self-imposed end-of-year target. Musk had shared a loftier goal of 500 Robotaxi cars in Austin before 2025 runs out. While there is no official information on how many robotaxis Tesla has on the road, estimates put the figure at about 30, meaning Austin-based customers will have to struggle to hail a ride from a fleet of 60 vehicles around the New Year.
Back in July, Musk predicted that Tesla’s robotaxi would be available to half of the US population by the end of the year, but that is proving highly optimistic at the moment.
Tesla currently operates robotaxi fleets in Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area. Its competitor, Waymo, is not sitting still and has expanded to other areas such as Los Angeles, Phoenix, Minneapolis, Tampa, and New Orleans.
