Tesla continues to dominate the global electric vehicle (EV) market, claiming both the top spots in worldwide EV sales for September 2025. According to data compiled by CleanTechnica and shared on X by user XFreeze, the Tesla Model Y once again secured the #1 position with 140,904 units sold, while the Model 3 followed in second place with 67,374 units delivered globally.
This marks yet another month of clear market dominance for Tesla, with the Model Y maintaining a commanding lead over all competitors. The electric SUV’s broad appeal continues to drive its success. The Model 3’s strong showing, bolstered by its recent design refresh and improved range, demonstrates Tesla’s ability to sustain consumer interest even amid increasing competition and tighter global economic conditions.
Together, the two models accounted for over 208,000 vehicles sold in September alone.

While Tesla claimed the top two spots, Chinese automakers continued to show their growing influence in the EV market. The Wuling HongGuang Mini EV ranked third with 54,498 units, followed closely by Geely’s Geome Xingyuan at 50,203. BYD placed several models in the top ten, including the Song/Seal U, Qin Plus, and Seagull/Dolphin Mini/Surf, reflecting its strong presence in China’s domestic market.
However, despite BYD’s breadth of offerings, none of its models came close to matching the global volume of either Tesla’s Model Y or Model 3.
The Tesla Model Y remains the world’s best-selling EV by a wide margin. Built at all four of Tesla’s vehicle Gigafactories—Fremont, Shanghai, Berlin, and Austin—the electric SUV has become Tesla’s most important product. Its blend of practicality, performance, and affordability relative to other luxury crossovers has made it a global success story.
