SpaceX’s Cellular Starlink network has taken a major leap forward, extending direct-to-satellite connectivity to Apple Watches for the first time. The new capability, available in Canada through Rogers and in Japan through KDDI’s au network, enables supported Apple Watch models to stay connected even beyond the reach of traditional mobile coverage.
The feature currently supports the Apple Watch Series 11, SE (3rd generation), and Ultra 3, letting users send and receive text messages directly through Starlink’s satellite constellation. Rogers confirmed the service is now available in beta for Canadian users at no cost, while KDDI in Japan offers the same feature as a paid add-on for customers with the cellular version of the Apple Watch.

Unlike Apple’s existing emergency-only satellite features powered by Globalstar, SpaceX’s Direct-to-Cell technology links the smartwatch directly to Starlink satellites. This eliminates the need for nearby cell towers, allowing users to stay in touch in remote regions or during outdoor activities where connectivity is often unreliable.
KDDI’s support documentation notes that users can currently send and receive text messages, share locations, and receive emergency alerts via Starlink, with additional features expected as the system matures.
Until now, Apple’s satellite capabilities were limited to iPhone emergency services and basic SOS features. By integrating Starlink connectivity, Apple Watch owners can now maintain a constant digital lifeline—ideal for hikers, travelers, and rural users who frequently venture beyond mobile networks.
