Tesla is preparing to launch a new, more affordable version of its best-selling Model Y, and based on teasers released by the company over the weekend, that debut is expected to happen today. While it’s not yet clear which markets will receive the new variant first, production is scheduled to begin soon at Giga Berlin in Europe.
During an internal company event at Giga Berlin on Monday, plant manager André Thierig confirmed that mass production of the new Model Y Standard will begin “in a few weeks,” with customer deliveries expected to start around the same time. (via Handelsblatt)
This news confirms availability of the new Model Y Standard for Europe, but we do know it will also be coming to the U.S. as test vehicles have been spotted near Giga Texas recently.
The new variant will target buyers seeking a lower entry point into the Model Y lineup without compromising Tesla’s signature performance and efficiency. However, it will come with a number of missing features compared to the rest of Tesla’s lineup.
Official Reveal Scheduled for Tuesday
Tesla plans to officially unveil the Model Y Standard on Tuesday, October 7, according to two teasers posted by Tesla over the weekend.
While Tesla has yet to confirm any specifications, the Model Y Standard is expected to feature a smaller LFP battery pack, single rear motor, and reduced interior options compared to the Long Range and Performance trims. Sources indicate the vehicle will focus on practicality and affordability rather than luxury, with fewer premium materials and simplified hardware.
The Model Y Standard, referred to internally as E41, will sport a simplified exterior with a redesigned front fascia, single-part headlights (no front light bar), and a closed roof instead of the signature glass panel. It also introduces 18-inch aero-optimized wheels and a front bumper-mounted camera, aligning with Tesla’s latest design direction.
Inside, the Model Y Standard trades luxury for practicality — featuring textile décor instead of wood or metal trim, manual steering wheel adjustments, a slightly smaller 15.4-inch touchscreen, no rear display, and manually controlled rear vents. It also lacks the HEPA-grade air filtration system found in higher trims but retains the same spacious 75 cubic feet of cargo room.
According to website code, the Model Y Standard may start at US$39,990 USD, roughly $5,000 below the Long Range RWD version, although the final price could drop closer to the mid-$35,000 range when officially announced.
