In the second quarter of 2025, General Motors and Ford continued to battle for electric vehicle (EV) market share in the United States, but their performance painted two very different pictures. While GM surged ahead with triple-digit EV growth, Ford suffered a steep decline amid safety recalls and supply constraints.
Ford’s EV Sales Down Sharply Due to Mach-E Recall
Ford reported a 31.4% drop in EV sales for Q2 2025, delivering just 16,438 electric vehicles compared to 23,957 in the same period last year. The decline was driven largely by a stop-sale order on the Mustang Mach-E, its best-selling EV, which was affected by a door latch defect that led to a recall of over 197,000 units in the U.S.
The Mustang Mach-E saw a 19.5% year-over-year drop to 10,178 units sold. The drop wasn’t limited to the Mach-E, as the F-150 Lightning fell 26% to 5,842 units, and the E-Transit commercial van plummeted 88% to only 418 units.
Despite the slump in EVs, Ford’s broader electrified vehicle lineup, including hybrids and plug-in hybrids, hit a record 156,509 sales in the first half of 2025. Hybrids like the Maverick and F-150 Hybrid helped offset the EV weakness, but the quarter underscored the automaker’s need to retool its EV strategy. Ford is now pivoting toward developing a new line of affordable electric models under $30,000, with launches expected in 2027.
GM EV Sales Soar 111%, Led by Equinox EV and Hummer
While Ford saw declines across the EV board, General Motors posted a strong Q2 for its EVs, with sales soaring 111% year-over-year to 46,280 units. This growth helped GM retain its spot as the second-best EV seller in the U.S., trailing only Tesla.
Key factors in GM’s EV success included the Chevrolet Equinox EV, which jumped over 1,600% to 17,420 units, and the GMC Hummer EV, which saw a 54% gain to 4,508 units. Cadillac’s luxury EV lineup also made gains, with new entries like the Optiq and Vistiq bolstering the brand’s position as the Q2 luxury EV market share leader.
GM’s strong EV quarter was part of a broader 7.3% increase in total U.S. sales, with 746,588 vehicles delivered. The company credited new and refreshed crossovers and pickup trucks, as well as robust execution across its brands, for its momentum.
