President Donald Trump is reportedly considering selling or giving away his new Tesla Model S, a vehicle he purchased just three months ago in a symbolic show of support for Elon Musk, after a dramatic public falling out between the two figures.
Trump’s purchase of the Model S in March was part of a White House event that saw several Tesla vehicles showcased on the South Lawn. At the time, the president praised Musk’s work and Tesla’s innovation, stating that the Model S was “as good as it gets.”
However, relations have soured rapidly this week, with Musk criticizing a major tax and spending bill championed by Trump. In response, Trump labeled Musk “crazy” and floated the idea of cutting federal contracts with Musk’s companies, including SpaceX.
Now, a senior White House official has confirmed that Trump is actively considering parting with the electric vehicle, which remains parked just steps from the Oval Office. While U.S. presidents are not permitted to drive on public roads, Trump’s ownership of the Tesla was viewed as a high-profile endorsement of the brand and its controversial CEO.
If Trump does follow through with the sale, the Model S, priced at over $80,000 with options at the time of purchase, could command a premium due to its presidential history, even though it has only been (lightly) used by members of his staff and other politicians.
