Yukon ends Tesla rebates, closes Starlink and X accounts in retaliation against U.S. tariffs

The Government of Yukon has announced the second phase of its response to the latest round of U.S. tariffs—despite those tariffs not directly affecting Canada. The new measures target one individual in particular – Elon Musk.

In a press release published late Thursday, Premier Ranj Pillai outlined actions the government is taking in protest of what he called “unjustified tariffs” imposed by the Trump Administration, calling them a threat to both economic stability and long-standing Canada–U.S. relations.

Effective immediately, Tesla vehicles and Level 2 home chargers are no longer eligible for rebates through the Good Energy program. Until now, Yukon had offered up to $5,000 in incentives for new electric vehicles (EVs) and $750 for chargers. Rebates continue to apply for other EVs, including those from U.S.-based automakers.

Yukon also announced it will begin reviewing its Starlink contracts. Accounts that are not critical to emergency response or business continuity will be cancelled, and the government says it is now actively exploring alternative low-Earth orbit (LEO) internet providers.

In a third move, Yukon will shut down its official accounts on X (formerly Twitter). Final posts on those accounts will direct residents to other communications channels, including the government’s website, Facebook, and Bluesky.

Though Premier Pillai framed the moves as solidarity with Canadian auto workers and a firm stance against economic intimidation, there is a clear target—Musk—through his companies Tesla, Starlink, and X.

Yukon now joins British Columbia, Manitoba, and Nova Scotia, all of which also removed Tesla from its rebates programs within the past month.
