Tesla Q4 and 2024 earnings call: what to expect

Tesla (TSLA) is set to announce its Q4 and full-year 2024 earnings results after the market closes later this afternoon. Despite a record final quarter in terms of vehicle deliveries, Tesla was unable to grow deliveries year-over-year (YoY), with sales declining a modest 1.1%. Today’s earnings call will provide details on the company’s financial performance, and likely include a few surprises.

Here’s what to watch for in Tesla’s upcoming report.

Wall Street analysts project Tesla’s Q4 2024 revenue to hit approximately $27.2 billion, an 8% increase from the previous year’s Q4 revenue of $25.2 billion. Tesla’s earnings per share (EPS) are expected to be around $0.75, up from $0.71 in Q4 2023. Operating profit is forecasted to rise to $2.7 billion, a notable increase from the $2.1 billion reported a year prior.

Vehicle Deliveries and Production

Tesla reported record deliveries in Q4 2024, reaching 495,570 vehicles. However, this fell short of analysts’ projections of over 510,000 vehicles. For the full year, Tesla delivered approximately 1.79 million vehicles, marking a slight decline from 2023’s 1.8 million deliveries—its first ever YoY drop in vehicle sales.

Elon Musk has previously stated that Tesla expects growth in automotive sales for 2025, supported by the introduction of new, lower-cost vehicles and the new Model Y. Tesla doesn’t typically make product announcements on earnings calls, so don’t expect much information on the upcoming models.

Full Self-Driving (FSD) and Optimus

Tesla’s progress in Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology is another highly anticipated topic. Elon Musk has claimed that Tesla will deploy Unsupervised FSD by mid-2025 in California and Texas. Tesla took a step towards that goal, announcing yesterday that newly built vehicles at Fremont now drive autonomously from the production line to the logistics lot.

There will likely also be an update on Optimus, which has been relatively quiet as of late. Musk will likely update its progress, as well as give potential production timelines and commercial viability.

Investor Q&A

Tesla (TSLA) investors will once again have their questions answered during the call. As of this morning, here are the top voted questions on the Say platform that are likely to be asked during today’s call.

  • Is unsupervised FSD still planned to be released in Texas and California this year? What hurdles still exist to make this happen?
  • Are there any discussions with other auto companies about licensing FSD?
  • When will Tesla start selling Optimus and price?
  • Elon has said publicly that long term shareholders of Tesla will have the ability to invest in his other companies. Could you provide some clarity/color as to what that looks like? Brokerage firms use FIFO so anyone who trades won’t have the true length of time as investor.
  • Is Optimus now mostly designed locked for 2025 production?
  • Is there a new affordable Tesla model coming soon?
  • What is the status on mass production of the Tesla Semi? How do you project it will affect revenue at scale?
  • Can you please tie purchased FSD to our owner accounts vs. locked to the car? This will help us enjoy it in any Tesla we drive/buy and reward us for hanging in so long, some of us since 2017.
  • Is it expected that Tesla will need to upgrade HW3 vehicles and if so, what is the timeline and expected impact to Tesla’s CapEx?
