Tesla wasting no time in completing first phase of Santa Monica’s 62-stall Supercharger

After a lengthy battle between Tesla and local lawmakers, construction on the 62-stall Santa Monica Supercharger is finally underway.

Based on recent photos and videos of the site, the automaker is wasting no time in getting the first phase up and running.

After finally being approved in April last year, construction of the Supercharger began last month with bulldozers doing some clearing and leveling the site on December 10, 2021.

Now just over one month later and a lot of progress has been made.

All of the underground utilities are in place and all 26 V3 Supercharger pedestals are installed based on pictures of the site taken by Ryan Zohoury (@RyanZohoury) on January 26, 2022.

Zohoury spoke with some of the workers at the site, and based on the pace of construction they estimated this first phase should be open by mid-February.

But according to site plans from last year, the second phase of the Santa Monica Supercharger should be much more interesting.

That side of the station will feature 36 V3 Supercharger stalls, most of which will be covered by a solar canopy, and feature a Megapack installation.

The energy in the Megapack will be added during off-peak hours when electricity costs are lower, and then used during peak times to help lower Tesla’s costs.

This side of the station will also feature a small building, which could house the 50’s style diner that Elon Musk said he hoped it would have.

Even though construction of the second phase hasn’t started just yet, Tesla owners can still get a charge at the site. There are currently 8 temporary Superchargers in the vacant parking lot.
