Starlink gives internet access to remote, rural areas of Malaysia

On August 24, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim approved the installation of a Starlink satellite internet device at an Orang Asli village in Ulu Kinta, Perak. According to a post on X of the Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil, Starlink will provide internet access to 400 residents living there. The terminal was installed in the village on Monday, which was great news.

The Kampung Orang Asli Tonggang settlement is believed to be the second Orang Asli village in the country to receive the device, according to local Free Malaysia Today. In July, Anwar announced that the government would purchase 40 units of Starlink internet devices for use in universities, colleges, and schools across the country. Now he proceeded to fulfill this promise as installation has begun.

Malaysia aims to improve internet access

Due to the geographical features of Malaysia, there were problems with internet access. In some settlements, it was impossible to lay cables due to the peculiarities of the landscape or because they were located on islands. Because of this, 3% of the population has never had access to the internet.

The Malaysian government has sought to improve internet access in the country. Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said in March that the Ministry of Communications and Digital, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, will hold discussions with telecommunications companies to identify and find appropriate solutions. After that, the country’s cooperation with Starlink was announced. As time has shown, it has been very successful, and some villages have already begun to access the internet.
