Uber Eats customers in the Phoenix metropolitan area may have a Waymo self-driving car deliver their food starting this week.
Waymo deliveries will be available to Phoenix, Chandler, Mesa, and Tempe. However, Uber Eats did not disclose what restaurants or chains will use the self-driving service for food delivery.
Do not worry, Uber Eats lovers; you will not have to tip the robots. Customers who opt for Waymo delivery will have standard Uber Eats charges, and that is it. Customers will also have the option to opt for a standard courier instead of a Waymo delivery.
In a blog post announcing the launch of the service, Uber noted:
The addition of food delivery to Uber’s ongoing partnership with Waymo reflects both companies’ mission to encourage zero-emission trips and unlock greater innovation for consumers and merchants in Phoenix and beyond.
For Waymo, this provides yet another use case for its self-driving fleet, which continues to test in the Bay area and multiple spots in Arizona. However, Uber did not provide details on whether they are considering a potential expansion of Waymo autonomous delivery services to other regions.
Waymo is the fifth autonomous delivery company to launch a pilot with Uber Eats. Uber is active in six other pilot markets for autonomous delivery with Uber Eats through partnerships with Cartken, Motional, Nuro, and Serve Robotics.
Together, Waymo and @Uber are making all-electric, fully autonomous delivery a reality. Starting today, @UberEats Eats customers in the Metro Phoenix area may get matched with a fully autonomous Waymo car to get the items they crave. https://t.co/A3CcuGN8gM pic.twitter.com/xUOgeKqKOX
