United Airlines is preparing to bring high-speed Starlink internet to its more of its aircraft. Beginning October 15, the carrier will debut its first Boeing 737-800 equipped with the Starlink’s satellite connectivity on a flight departing from Newark Liberty International Airport.
The rollout follows the Federal Aviation Administration’s certification of Starlink equipment for United’s 737-800 jets this week. This supplemental type certificate (STC) gives the airline the green light to begin installations across its larger fleet, a process that will eventually include more than 16 aircraft models.
United has already made significant progress in deploying Starlink across its smaller jets. Since introducing the service in May, the airline has outfitted over half of its United Express regional fleet with the system, installing Starlink on roughly 50 aircraft each month.
“Customers are loving the Starlink experience onboard our regional aircraft, and our first Starlink-equipped mainline aircraft will bring a superior inflight experience to even more people,” said Grant Milstead, United’s vice president of digital technology.
United is offering Starlink service free of charge to all MileagePlus members, which is free to join.
In Canada, WestJet announced this week it plans to complete Starlink installations on all its Boeing 737-800 and MAX-8 aircraft by the end of 2025.
