Tesla’s push into energy storage is set to reach a new milestone as the company’s Megafactory in Shanghai nears the end of construction.
After breaking ground just seven months ago, the project is now on track for completion by the end of this year, Tesla officials told the local media outlet Shanghai Daily. As previously announced, Tesla plans to begin production of Megapacks in the first quarter of 2025.
Tesla’s swift construction timeline in Shanghai surpasses even the record set by Giga Shanghai, which took approximately ten months to complete in 2019.
The Shanghai Megafactory represents Tesla’s first energy storage plant outside the United States, marking a significant expansion of the company’s global footprint. Located in the Lingang area near Giga Shanghai, the facility is expected to produce up to 10,000 Megapacks annually.
This translates to an impressive 40 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy storage capacity each year, enough to power approximately 50,000 households in Shanghai for an entire year, matching the output of Tesla’s other Megafactory in Lathrop, California.
Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Group, a key player in the region, was the first to place an order for Megapacks from the new factory. Beyond serving the domestic market, the Shanghai Megafactory will export Megapacks globally.
