Tesla’s Megapack to power France’s largest battery energy storage project

Tesla will supply its Megapack batteries to support France’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS) plant. The American company will collaborate with Harmony Energy for the project, dubbed Project Chevire, located in Nantes Saint-Nazaire Harbour.

The 100 MW/200 MWh battery project will store enough energy to supply 170,000 homes for up to two hours. Tesla’s Autobidder EMS solution will manage the output.

Harmony Energy expects to start construction on Project Chevire soon and will complete the development in 2025. The site was formerly used by a power station fired by oil, coal, and gas.

Andy Symonds, CEO of Harmony Energy in France, said, “Developing and operating vital battery energy storage facilities across France will lead to enhanced energy security, more affordable energy bills, and the decarbonization of the grid. We are excited to commence building works on our first project.”

Tesla has supplied batteries to Harmony Energy before. The latter has the three biggest BESS projects in Europe under its belt, each powered by Megapack batteries.

Meanwhile, Tesla’s battery business is booming. The company’s Energy division reported a record 9.4 GWh deployment in Q2 2024. With orders like the massive 15.3 GWh contract from Intersect Solar, the division could soon compete, or exceed Tesla’s automotive business in terms of revenue.
