Tesla to launch gifting of FSD subscriptions in time for the holidays

Tesla will soon make it possible for owners to gift its Full Self-Driving (FSD) subscription to others, just in time for the holiday season. The move, teased by a Tesla software engineer, could help the company attract new users to its driver-assistance system.

The idea gained attention after Tesla watcher Sawyer Merritt suggested on X that the company should allow owners to “pay and gift a monthly FSD (Supervised) subscription to other Tesla owners.”

Merritt noted that it would also benefit the company and would be a smart way to encourage more drivers to try the technology. “Tesla should do everything it can to get people to try/use FSD,” Merritt wrote. “It’s the giving season after all!”

Shortly after the post went viral among Tesla fans, Raj Jegannathan, a Tesla software engineer, replied: “Will have it ready before holidays!” The comment strongly implies that Tesla was already working on the feature and plans to launch it soon.

Currently, FSD subscriptions cost $99 per month in Canada, and $99 per month in the U.S., making it one of the rare times Canadians are getting the better deal. The exact details of the gifting option are still unknown, but in his post Merritt proposed giving gifters the option to purchase multiple terms — including one-month, three-month, and six-month options.

If Tesla rolls out the gifting feature, it would mark the company’s first time enabling FSD subscriptions to be shared between owners. The low-cost option could make FSD a popular holiday gift among Tesla drivers and serve as a marketing tool for the automaker. A surge in trial users could provide valuable feedback data while demonstrating the capability of the company’s latest FSD software.
