Tesla Supercharger under construction in Wandering River [Alberta]

Tesla owners traveling through northern Alberta will soon have another crucial charging stop. Construction is well underway on a new 8-stall V4 Tesla Supercharger station in Wandering River.

Located in the parking lot of the Shell gas station at 101 1st Street, the project appears to have progressed rapidly thanks to the use of Tesla’s prefabricated Supercharger units (PSU), according to photos shared with Drive Tesla by one of our readers, Todd H., showing the site nearly complete. The new Supercharger is being built just off Highway 63, a major route connecting Edmonton to Fort McMurray, one of Canada’s most remote urban centres.

Once operational, Wandering River will fill one of the final charging gaps along the busy Edmonton–Fort McMurray corridor. Tesla confirmed late last year a Supercharger site was coming to Fort McMurray, and based on work being done on that site, it should start construction in the next few weeks.

Together with Wandering River, these two new stations will enable seamless EV travel through an area that previously required careful planning for range.

This route has long been a sticking point for EV drivers in northern Alberta, where charging options have been sparse and unreliable compared to the southern part of the province. The new station will make it far easier for Tesla owners — as well as non-Tesla EV drivers — to make the 435 km trip with confidence.

The Wandering River site is part of a broader Tesla expansion adding 56 new Supercharger stalls across Alberta in 2026. Tesla’s V4 Supercharger hardware, capable of delivering up to 350 kW for compatible vehicles, is being installed in Wandering River, and is expected to be featured in Fort McMurray as well.
