Tesla has shaken up its software update process by releasing two separate Full Self-Driving (FSD) versions in a single update. The latest software package, 2024.45.25.15, rolled out late on Saturday night
This update included FSD V13.2.4 for Tesla vehicles equipped with the latest HW4/AI4 self-driving computers. The update also included FSD V12.6.1 for those with the earlier HW3, including for the Model Y and Model 3 for the first time.
While it may seem insignificant, the dual-version release represents a major milestone for Tesla’s software strategy, enabling vehicles with different hardware configurations to receive the same overarching update while running distinct FSD versions optimized for their systems.
This streamlined process eliminates the need for separate updates and ensures that more owners can benefit from the latest advancements simultaneously.
Perhaps the most significant breakthrough in this release is Tesla’s newfound ability to push FSD updates independently from the main vehicle firmware. Traditionally, FSD updates have been bundled with broader system updates, which could lead to delays and longer installation times.
By decoupling FSD updates, Tesla has opened the door to faster rollouts and more efficient software delivery.
What’s New in FSD V12.6.1 for HW3?
FSD V12.6.1 includes advancements that bring it closer in performance to the latest V13 software in HW4/AI4 vehicles. Previously this version was released only for the Model S and Model X on New Year’s Eve, but according to Tesla AI VP Ashok Elluswamy on X, is now rolling out “generally” to all HW3/AI3 vehicles. Notable improvements in this update include:
- End-to-End Highway Driving: Enhancements allow for smoother and more reliable navigation on highways.
- Improved City Streets Behavior: Better handling of urban scenarios, including more confident decision-making at intersections.
- Customizable Speed Profiles: FSD v12.6 introduces Chill, Standard, and Hurry driving modes for speed limits of 80km/h (50mph) or higher, offering greater control in varying traffic conditions.
- Enhanced Lane Change Logic: Improved lane selection and exit anticipation provide earlier, more natural lane changes for a smoother driving experience.
- Redesigned Controller: Borrowed from FSD v13, the updated controller enhances object tracking, path prediction, and situational awareness for smoother and more confident driving.
- Max Speed Update: Max Speed Offset lets drivers set speed limits with percentage adjustments, tailored to their driving environment and local enforcement tendencies.
The rollout of 2024.45.25.15 is still in its early stages, but if all goes well with this initial rollout, broader availability is expected in the coming days.
