Tesla has now started offering Energy Boost, a software upgrade which will add up to 50 miles (80km) of driving range for the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) in the US. The upgrade is unfortunately not available for Canadian owners of the Model Y RWD, and starts from US$1,000.
According to a post by Tesla North America on X (formerly Twitter), owners of the now discontinued entry-level Model Y RWD can now unlock more driving range. The Energy Boost upgrade will give owners 30 miles (48km) more between charges for US$1,000, while US$1,600 will unlock 50 miles. Which option appears for owners will depend on the battery type in your vehicle, Musk said on X.
Model Y RWD owners will be pleasantly surprised that Energy Boost costs less than Musk stated, who posted on X earlier this year it would cost as much as US$2,000.
The extra range is added through a software unlock, which owners can purchase through the mobile app. The upgrade will be applied after an over-the-air (OTA) software update and bring the driving range close to the new entry-level Model Y Long Range RWD, which has a range of 320 miles (515km) on a full charge.
However, this upgrade is only available in the US. Canadian Model Y RWD owners will not get Energy Boost, as the version Tesla sells in Canada comes with a different type of battery (LFP) than the previous Model Y RWD in the US.
Tesla has been spotted testing an upgraded Model Y but has warned the ‘Project Juniper’ update won’t come this year.
