Tesla Model Y Was Europe’s Best-Selling Car in September

The Tesla Model Y posted a strong sales result in Europe in September. The electric SUV beat out all competitors by a wide margin to become the best-selling car in the region last month.

The Model Y was Europe’s best-selling car in September, according to preliminary sales figures from Dataforce published by Automotive News Europe. In its Q3 2024 financial report, the company also confirmed that the car indeed “was the best-selling vehicle in Europe in the month of September.” It is the second time this year that the midsize SUV has taken the top spot for monthly sales. Model Y’s win comes even as its sales fell 3.6 percent last month to 28,680. However, they were still around 8,000 units ahead of its nearest rival.

The race for second place remains tight, with figures representing 99 percent of sales in the European Union, EFTA markets and the UK. Hungary and Slovakia are yet to report, so sales figures for other cars could vary slightly. Volkswagen Tiguan beat Renault Clio with 20,763 to 20,306, but there could still be changes. Tiguan sales rose 28 percent last month, while Clio sales were up 0.8 percent, according to preliminary figures.

The Dacia Sandero took fourth place this month after its sales fell 0.5 percent to 19,346. However, the Renault Group’s small budget hatchback has claimed the top spot in Europe for sales six times in these nine months of 2024.

Kia Sportage, with 16,284 sales, will battle Peugeot 208, with 16,103, for fifth place. There is also a battle for seventh place, with VW Golf leading Toyota Yaris Cross by 15,722 to 15,498. There is an even tighter battle between Toyota Yaris and Opel/Vauxhall Corsa subcompacts for 12th place, with Yaris leading its segment rival by just 67 sales.

Sandero leads with nine-month sales of 203,474, followed by Golf (165,370) and Clio (162,021). T-Roc is fourth with 156,803 sales. Tesla Model Y rounds out the top five with 155,428 sales. However, Tesla has three of its busiest months ahead, so its position in the top 5 for the year could change. In August, Model Y was the eighth best-selling car in Europe for the year, up from ninth in July. The compact SUV became the best-selling car in Europe for the first time in 2023 and still has a good chance of defending its title.
