Tesla Model Y sales in China hit a new yearly high in September. Sales of the electric SUV in the domestic market were the highest this year and the highest ever for September.
Model Y retail sales in China in September totaled 48,202 units, the highest for a single month this year, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). That was up 6.34 percent from 45,330 units in August and 16.35 percent from 41,428 units in the same month last year, according to CnEVPost calculations.
Tesla sold 72,200 vehicles in China in September, setting a new yearly high. Model Y accounted for 66.76 percent of the company’s retail sales in the country last month.
From January to September, Model Y retail sales in China totaled 337,648 units, up 5.48 percent year-on-year. This accounted for 73.37 percent of Tesla’s total sales in China during the same period, which totaled 460,200 units.
Giga Shanghai exported 2,950 Model Ys in September, down 75.04 percent from 11,821 units in the same month a year earlier, and down 73.13 percent from 10,979 units in August. The company’s factory always focuses more on domestic deliveries at the end of each quarter. From January to September, Giga Shanghai exported 68,197 Model Ys, down 50.11 percent year-on-year. This year, Tesla has been focusing on producing the refreshed Model 3.
Model 3 retail sales in China in September were 23,998 units, the highest sales figure since September 2022. This accounted for 33.24 percent of Tesla’s sales in China last month. Sales of the vehicle in China were up 1,054.3 percent in September from 2,079 units in the same month last year, and 32.4 percent from 18,126 units in August. From January to September, Model 3 retail sales in China were 122,552 units, up 7.86 percent year-on-year.
Model 3 exports were 13,171 units in September, down 29.74 percent year-on-year but up 7.41 percent compared to August. Consumers around the world are rushing to get their updated Model 3s. From January to September, the sedan’s exports totaled 147,361 units, up 14.57 percent year-on-year.
From January to September, 405,845 units of the China-made Model Y were sold domestically and exported, down 11.16 percent year-on-year. In the first nine months of this year, 269,913 units of the China-made Model 3 were sold, up 11.42 percent year-on-year.
