Tesla has officially entered the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market. On Tuesday the company opened their first showroom in Mumbai, launched sales of the Model Y, and announced the locations of the first Superchargers planned for the country.
According to Tesla’s online configurator in India, two versions of the Model Y are available to buyers – the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and Long Range RWD. However, due to the high import taxes, the prices for both variants are significantly higher than in the U.S., starting at around US$70,000, compared to the Long Range RWD which starts at US$44,990.
The vehicles are being imported from Tesla’s Giga Shanghai in China
- Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) – ₹60 lakh (~US$70,000)
- Model Y Long Range RWD – ₹68 lakh (~US$79,000)
Alongside the launch, Tesla has also revealed that eight Supercharger locations are in development across the Delhi and Mumbai regions. Additional infrastructure, including Service and Delivery Centers, are expected to follow.

To celebrate the launch, Tesla also held a grand opening part at their Mumbai showroom, the company’s first physical presence in the country, with a second showroom planned for New Delhi. The company secured its Mumbai lease in March and has since been hiring staff in preparation for the launch.
