Tesla Launches Internal Hiring Campaign for AI Operators in California

Tesla is rolling out an internal hiring campaign to boost its Robotaxi AI Operator numbers as they continue to scale operations in California.

According to posters posted inside Tesla’s California facilities, production associates and material handlers are being offered extra hours and additional pay if they opt into the position.

In California, Tesla’s Robotaxi fleet needs an AI Operator to sit in the driver’s seat to actively monitor the vehicle while it is in operation, as specified in its current licence. Per Business Insider, as of December, Tesla had 1,655 vehicles and 798 Drivers registered for its Robotaxi ride-hailing service in California.

However, as demand is growing and Tesla continues to test the vehicles, the company needs to add AI Operators to keep expansion plans on track and reduce wait times in the app.

These operators will eventually be phased out as Tesla moves towards a fully autonomous licence in the state.

Other Tesla facilities have similarly been targeted for internal positions as AI Operators, including Austin, Arizona and Nevada.

Tesla is also hiring outside the company, with job opportunities currently up in Illinois, Massachusetts, Colorado and Texas. The role includes workers sitting behind the wheel while FSD is engaged, interacting with passengers and collecting detailed reports on vehicle performance. The pay ranges from $25 to $30 per hour.
