Tesla has issued a new recall for the Cybertruck, although as with most of Tesla’s recalls, the fix is a simple over-the-air (OTA) software update which has already been deployed.
According to the recall documents posted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website, 27,185 Cybertrucks were not compliant with the rear visibility standard (FMVSS 111, S6.2.3) because the rearview camera may not display within two seconds when shifting into reverse.
Tesla noted that it could take up to 6-8 seconds for the image to display, which could increase the risk of a collision, although no injuries or accidents have been reported.
Tesla identified this issue during an internal audit on September 12, 2024, and voluntarily decided to recall the vehicles on September 19, 2024.
Tesla has already applied a software fix to vehicles in production as of September 18, 2024, and fixed the issue in Cybertrucks already delivered with software version 2024.26 or higher.
This recall also provides new information on how many Cybertrucks have been built to date. As indicated in the recall, it covers Cybertrucks built between November 13, 2023 and September 14, 2024, the full period of production, and totals 27,185. This is a notable increase from the over 11,688 it had produced up to June 6, a figure which was revealed in a recall for the wiper and a trim issue.
