Tesla’s Giga Texas workforce shrank by 22% in 2025 as the automaker continues to refine and streamline its US-based workforce.
The drop in employee numbers was spotted by the Austin American-Statesman. The newspaper reviewed an annual compliance report for Travis County that was done ahead of the fiscal close.
Per the report, Tesla’s numbers dropped from 21,191 in 2024 to 16,506 in 2025. Although this is a significant drop, Tesla remains the number one employer in the county and continues to invest in the facility.
It remains unclear which teams were affected, or whether it was a general drop across the company. However, a decrease of almost 5,000 workers is significant for any plant, especially in the automotive sector.
For those who have been paying attention to the labour front, this is no surprise. Tesla is embracing automation, and with more robotic and automated processes, it needs less on-site manpower.
Plus, with plans to use Optimus robots to handle simplified tasks in Tesla facilities over the next few years, we may see labour numbers continue to dip across all of Tesla’s Giga factories, even as they expand into robotics and chip manufacturing.
