Tesla finally launching officially in India; Model Y available from July 15

Tesla is finally launching officially in India, with the first showroom going live on July 15. The automaker will hold a special event at the facility in Mumbai.

Tesla obtained the final approval from the Maharashtra Regional Transport Office (RTO) for its Indian subsidiary, Tesla India Motors and Energy Pvt Ltd. The permit allows Tesla to operate showrooms, carry out road trials, transport unregistered vehicles, and ultimately sell cars in the country. It is valid for five years.

The American EV maker’s Indian account on X posted a “Coming soon” message, referring to the official launch.

Tesla has had a long history with India, with many speculations of an imminent launch coming to nothing. CEO Elon Musk met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US in February, with a follow-up phone call in April, obviously helping to remove the remaining hurdles.

Tesla is understood to kick off sales in India with the Model Y, out of its new service and warehouse centre located near the Mumbai international airport. It will initially import cars and focus on running showrooms, instead of manufacturing in India as previously reported. The biggest country by population, however, is relaxing its rules for foreign EV makers setting up local production, as part of efforts to accelerate electric mobility adoption.
