Tesla expands free lifetime Supercharging to Model X buyers

Tesla has expanded its free lifetime Supercharging incentive to include the Model X in both Canada and the United States, following the introduction of the offer for the Model S last year. Much like when the incentive appeared then, it has again arrived right after a price increase on the Model X.

On Thursday night Tesla raised prices of the Model X by $7,000 in Canada and $5,000 in the U.S., bringing the base price of the electric SUV to C$121,990/US$84,990. To help take off some of the sting of the higher price, Tesla announced on Friday morning that the Model X is also now eligible for free lifetime Supercharging.

The return of free lifetime Supercharging is a throwback to Tesla’s early days when the Model S and Model X came with unlimited Supercharging that stayed with the car. However, this time around, the incentive is tied to the original owner and is non-transferable.

This means that if the owner sells the vehicle, the free charging does not carry over to the next buyer, limiting its long-term resale value.

For buyers who frequently rely on Tesla’s Supercharger network, the incentive could add up to significant savings over the long run, depending on how often they charge on the road. However, for those who mainly charge at home, the financial advantage might not be as impactful, making the price increase a more substantial factor in their purchasing decision.

Ultimately the decision comes down to how much you value free lifetime Supercharging versus the increased purchase price. While it may not be as universally appealing as when it was originally offered with unlimited transferability, it still represents a valuable perk for long-term Tesla owners who frequently travel and use the Supercharger network.
