The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has awarded the Tesla Cybertruck a 5-star Overall Safety Rating. This rating applies to both the 2024 and 2025 Cybertruck, and includes both variants, and comes after critics claimed the Cybertruck was unsafe due to its unique and unconventional design.
Upon its unveiling, the Cybertruck’s unconventional, angular design sparked debates regarding its safety, particularly concerning pedestrian impacts and crash performance. Critics expressed concerns that the vehicle’s stainless steel exoskeleton and sharp edges might pose increased risks to pedestrians in collisions. The Cybertruck’s crumple zones were also scrutinized, as the design of these play a crucial role in absorbing impact energy during crashes.
As it turns out, those concerns were unfounded, as the Cybertruck’s performance in NHTSA’s rigourous testing indicates that Tesla has built another one of the world’s safest vehicles.
According to the NHTSA, the Cybertruck excelled in all categories:
- Frontal Crash Tests: Simulating head-on collisions at 35 mph, the Cybertruck achieved a 5-star rating for the driver and a 4-star rating for the front passenger.
- Side Crash Tests: Evaluating impacts from the side, the Cybertruck secured a 5-star rating, indicating robust protection for occupants.
- Rollover Resistance: The Cybertruck demonstrated a minimal rollover risk of just 12.40%, earning a 5-star rating in this category.

When all was said and done, like other Tesla vehicle, the Cybertruck boasted the lowest overall probability of injury and the lowest chance of rollover among all pickup trucks tested by the NHTSA.
The Cybertruck’s 5-star rating aligns with Tesla’s history of producing vehicles that excel in safety assessments. Previously the Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y have all received top safety ratings from multiple regulatory bodies, reflecting Tesla’s ongoing dedication to vehicle safety.
