Tesla closing Q3 2024 in China with strong sales momentum

Tesla’s sales in China are closing out the third quarter of 2024 with impressive momentum. New data shows that the automaker is not only maintaining its foothold in the Chinese EV market, but also surpassing its performance from the previous year, and is on track to have one of its strongest quarters in China to date.

For the week of September 9-15, 2024, Tesla saw 15,600 new vehicle registrations in China, according to insurance registration data tracked by X user @tslachan.

Insurance registration data is not official sales data from the China Passenger Association (CPCA), which comes after the month closes, but it does serve as a reliable proxy for vehicle sales.

While this marks a slight decrease from the prior week’s 16,200 registrations, it is the second most registrations in all of 2024, and part of a broader, consistently strong trend from the beginning of July, the start of the third quarter. With the accumulated figures, Tesla China has already logged 46,200 registrations over the last three weeks, with two more weeks to go before the end of the quarter.

These figures come after Tesla sold 63,456 vehicles in China in August, the highest monthly total for Tesla so far in 2024. July, the first month of the quarter during which time Tesla prioritizes vehicles for export, the company sold 46,227 domestically in China.

Add it all up, and Tesla has unofficially sold approximately 156,000 vehicles in China in third quarter so far. With a strong performance for the remainder of the month, Tesla could end up with over 185,000 sales from July to September in China. The automaker has so far sold over 423,000 vehicles in China in 2024, putting it on track to surpass the 474,000 vehicles it sold in China in 2023.
