A Rapid Climb for Tesla in Australia
When Tesla officially entered the Australian market a decade ago, early adoption was slow, hampered by high prices, limited EV awareness, and a sparse public charging network. But momentum began to shift around 2019 with the launch of the Model 3, which quickly became Australia’s best-selling electric vehicle and, in some months, one of the country’s top-selling passenger cars overall.
More recently, the Model Y has taken over as Tesla’s volume leader. In 2023 and 2024, it routinely appeared near the top of national sales charts—electric or otherwise—helping Tesla account for a large share of Australia’s rapidly expanding EV fleet.
Reaching 150,000 Teslas on the road places the company well ahead of any other EV manufacturer in the region.
Infrastructure Growth Fuels Expansion
Tesla’s milestone has been supported by aggressive charging-network expansion. The company now operates one of Australia’s most extensive fast-charging networks, with Supercharger sites stretching from major capital cities to smaller towns and long-distance travel corridors.
