Tesla has officially announced that Canadian Cybertruck owners now have access to PowerShare, a feature that makes the electric pickup truck as more than just a vehicle, turning it into a mobile energy backup system.
PowerShare leverages the Cybertruck’s massive battery capacity to provide energy backup for homes and devices. Essentially, it turns the truck into a rolling power source, capable of delivering up to 123 kWh, or the equivalent of about 10 Powerwalls, back into a home.
This is enough to power an average Canadian home for several days, ensuring heating, lighting, and critical appliances continue to function during emergencies. For those living in rural or remote areas, PowerShare can support off-grid energy needs, making it ideal for cabins in remote parts of the country.
Along with the Cybertruck, owners will need to purchase and install the Tesla PowerShare Gateway. This device manages the connection to the electrical grid, automatically detecting outages and facilitating a seamless transition to backup power supplied by the Cybertruck. When paired with the Universal Wall Connector, the PowerShare Gateway allows the Cybertruck to deliver up to 11.5 kW of continuous power to a home during an outage.
For Canadian Cybertruck owners, just like in the US, get a $3,500 Tesla Shop voucher they can use to put towards the costs of installation and the required Powershare equipment. Since Powershare only launched today, we have yet to hear how much it costs to install in Canada, but prices vary wildly in the US, especially based on the needs and existing infrastructure available.
Tesla is partnering with QMerit for installations in the Canada. The company has set up a website for Canadian Cybertruck owners to fill out a questionnaire about their installation needs.
